How many of the suspended Meteora monasteries in Thessaly still shelter monks and can be visited?(give a different answer) .
The first monk community here was founded in the 10th century, and, by 16th century, 24 monasteries were erected on the 1000 feet rocks overlooking Peneus Valley. Four are open to the public and other 2 are still inhabited by monks. Meteora actually means "in the air", and the monasteries are perched on weired spikes and cliffs, carved by the sea 30 million years ago. Till 1920, monks reached them only by means of retractable ladders and nets, now, thank goodness, there's stares.
